I had a shoot on Wednesday. It was 107 degrees that day – the hottest day of the year so far here in Los Angeles. When it gets this hot, I prefer to shoot at night because the swamp coolers in the studio simply can’t keep up. But my model said she had plans for the evening. So we went in the hottest part of the day. I decided to go up on the roof to hose down the coolers to aid in their efficiency. The first thing I noticed was no running water.
I went back down and discovered no running water in the building. I didn’t think much more of it at the moment and pressed on. A while later, I noticed the coolers weren’t blowing cold air anymore. Then it hit me, without water, they can’t work. But we pressed on and did our shoot despite the heat.
Later it was discovered that someone stole the copper pipe that fed water into the building. It’s funny in a way, but I also feel sad for someone who is in such sad shape financially that he will cut a few feet of pipe off a building to sell it for scrap. I guess maybe it’s faster than collecting aluminum cans.
