When I started shooting in a studio almost a year ago, I quickly realized that my camera (although good for the style of shooting I did prior) was inadequate for the style of shooting I would doing there. What I’m referring to here is going from using flashes or strobes to shooting in continuous light. With the camera I had, I was limited by the sensor. I was constantly shooting at or near the camera’s limits. So I started looking into an upgrade. About the same time there was a rumor that Canon was coming out with a new model in the 5D series that Summer. So I decided to wait and see. As Summer passed, the rumors changed to fall, then by the holidays, then Spring of 2012. It finally did happen. I read that Canon was going to make an announcement on on March 2. At 1AM in the wee hours, I went on the internet and pre-ordered it. So I am one of the early owners of the new Canon 5D Mark III.
To get acquainted with my new tool, I asked Melissa Raven to come to the studio with me to let me play. So I played around with some ideas I wouldn’t normally do in a regular shoot. For example, in photos 2 & 3 I actually did use flash units, but they were jelled with blue and purple to color the smoke in on photo and the pillars in the background of the other. The two candlelit shots would not have worked with the old camera. The sensor on the 5D mark III is simply amazing.
Last week, I did my first official Bob’s Tgirls shoot with the new cam. She will make her debut on the site soon. I also shot her video with that cam. My 30D didn’t have that capability. It looks like I may stop using my video camera for future shoots. So things are changing all over the place here with me. Stay tuned.
